Eight businesses on one block: a bakery, a lawn service, a dentist, a cinema, a hardware store, a free app, a credit union and a nonprofit shelter. Your student works out what all of them have in common, then finds the one that is quietly losing money.

The free app is the argument worth having — your student will say it is not a business because nobody pays for it, and working out who the customer actually is takes five very useful minutes.

Alder Street returns in every later unit, so this lesson is also the introduction to the cast.
